Somao<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0or<\/span>\u00a0Somado<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0is a<\/span>\u00a0parish<\/span>\u00a0council<\/span>\u00a0of\u00a0Pravia<\/span>\u00a0(Asturias)<\/span>,\u00a0with a population of<\/span>\u00a0330 inhabitants.<\/span>\u00a0It is located in<\/span>\u00a0the northern part<\/span>\u00a0of the municipality<\/span>, 11 km\u00a0from the capital,<\/span>\u00a0Pravia<\/span>.\u00a0The parish<\/span>\u00a0bounded on the north with<\/span>\u00a0Muros de Nal\u00f3n<\/span>;\u00a0east<\/span>\u00a0and south with\u00a0<\/span>the parish of<\/span>\u00a0Santianes<\/span>;\u00a0southwest<\/span>\u00a0with<\/span>Villafr\u00eda<\/span>;\u00a0and west with<\/span>\u00a0Cudillero.<\/span><\/p>\n

Somao<\/strong>\u00a0is the perfect setting to discover the beauty of the central-western coast of\u00a0Asturias.<\/strong>\u00a0It should be noted that\u00a0Cudillero,<\/strong>\u00a0one of the most breath-taking fishing villages in the area, with hidden gems such as the French inspired Selgas Palace (XIX C.) in\u00a0El Pito<\/strong>, include an important collection of paintings by the likes of\u00a0Goya<\/em>\u00a0and El\u00a0Greco<\/em>\u00a0among others. Nearby\u00a0Cape Busto<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Cape Vidio<\/strong>\u00a0with their dramatic cliffs overlook the Cantabrian Sea, offering endless views of the Asturian coastline. Other alluring places worth mentioning are\u00a0San Mart\u00edn de Lui\u00f1a<\/strong>, famous for its cows or the\u00a0Santa Ana<\/strong>\u00a0hermitage on\u00a0Santa Ana<\/strong>\u00a0mountain, where every July a traditional country meadow party is held.<\/p>\n[\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner bg_type=”” dima_canvas_style=”” translate_x=”0″ dima_z_index=”0″ top_and_bottom_padding=”” left_and_right_padding=””][vc_column_inner delay=”” delay_duration=”” delay_offset=”” sd=”12″ translate_x=”0″ dima_z_index=”0″ width=”1\/1″ id=”” class=”” style=””]

The port of\u00a0San Esteban<\/strong>\u00a0de\u00a0Pravia<\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0Muros del Nal\u00f3n<\/strong>\u00a0council is very near\u00a0Somao.<\/strong>\u00a0Years ago this was where ships were loaded with the coal that came from the Asturian mountains. The old loading cranes are all that remain, like silent witnesses of the passing of time. Today,\u00a0San Esteban<\/strong>\u00a0has reinvented itself with an eye on the growing tourism in the area. While the attentive and thorough gastronomic offering reflects tradition, several restaurants in the area bring to the table elaborate and sophisticated\u00a0 proposals. At the end of the port we find the breakwater. In winter, the storms create one of the most impressive sights imaginable,\u00a0 with waves crashing against the concrete jetty.<\/p>\n

And thanks to the new Cantabrian Motorway,\u00a0Luarca<\/strong>\u00a0in the council of\u00a0Navia<\/strong>\u00a0or the small charming fishing village of\u00a0Puerto Vega<\/strong>, are just 30 minutes away by car. These are just a few of the many typical coastal villages easily accessed from\u00a0Somao.<\/strong>\u00a0In any one of these coastal towns and villages you can enjoy fresh seafood from the local restaurants and we are certain you be won\u2019t disappointed.<\/p>\n

There are a great number of beaches scattered along our coast which have been awarded Blue Flag status on account of the quality of its facilities, like\u00a0Aguilar<\/em>\u00a0beach (Muros del Nal\u00f3n<\/strong>),\u00a0Los Quebrantos<\/em>\u00a0beach (Soto del Barco<\/strong>) o\u00a0San Pedro de la Ribera<\/em>\u00a0beach\u00a0(Cudillero).<\/strong>\u00a0Other untouched beaches include\u00a0Oleiros<\/em>\u00a0(Cudillero),<\/strong>\u00a0Las Llanas<\/em>\u00a0(Muros del Nal\u00f3n<\/strong>), or the marvellous playa del\u00a0Silence<\/em>\u00a0(beach of silence) in\u00a0Cudillero.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Although Somao faces the sea it hasn\u2019t forgotten its lush countryside. A short drive brings you to the Asturian mountains with chestnuts, winding country roads and farm villages off the beaten track and far from the noise and bustle. Pravia, Sales and Candamo counties hide beautiful gems: pre-romanesque chapels, like those found in Santianes de Pravia, monasteries of pilgrimage like the one in San Salvador en Cornellana (Salas), medieval palaces like the Doriga Palace or the Vald\u00e9s Palace (Salas), cave paintings like those of The pe\u00f1a de Candamo Carven. Or why not just lose yourself along the sleepy country roads that weave through the treasured forests of beech and chestnut.<\/p>\n

Here gastronomy takes on a new meaning. The local produce is grown and raised traditionally making for top quality products which are highly regarded: beans, greens, the famed Pravia peas, the kiwis of Nal\u00f3n valley, strawberries of Candamo, the salmon of the Narcea and Nal\u00f3n rivers or the \u201cculona\u201d calves and lambs that pasture in these counties. Some of the most typical dishes are prepared using these ingredients such as cabbage stew, \u201ccachopo\u201d (a breaded steak, ham and cheese combination), stuffed onions, \u201cfrixuelos\u201d (Asturian crepes), rice pudding and of course the renowned bean stew called fabada.<\/p>\n[\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner bg_type=”” dima_canvas_style=”” translate_x=”0″ dima_z_index=”0″ top_and_bottom_padding=”” left_and_right_padding=””][vc_column_inner delay=”” delay_duration=”” delay_offset=”” sd=”12″ translate_x=”0″ dima_z_index=”0″ width=”1\/1″ id=”” class=”” style=””]
